On Sunday 3rd June, Andrea blessed our new banner.
While planning our congregational retreat at the Cathedral of the Isles, the idea came up of making another banner for the church as part of a retreat activity, and we asked Caroline if the Dorcas group would like to be part of the project too. There was much enthusiasm!
The idea sparks from the Bible reading we studied on the retreat, when the risen Lord Jesus is waiting on the shore as the tired disciples return with no fish, and he tells them to cast their nets on the other side of their boats.
Of course, a fish was the sign of the early church, and we have one large fish filled with many little fish. The big fish is our church, St Andrew’s, with no hard outline, as we are open to all.
Members of the church and some friends from Dorcas cut out their own fish, and decorated them in many different ways, to make each distinctive. The little fish represent each of us. The big fish is not completely covered with the littlies because there is always room for more! Some little fish are swimming around the edges, which is fine, as they can be welcomed into the church at any time, and the background of blue, turquoise and purple are the ocean; the ocean of God’s love in which we live and move and have our being.
