Robin gave some helpful background to the context of each of our scripture passages. He then invited us to reflect further on their relevance to our current context, personally, locally, nationally and internationally. He outlined some of his own noticing and wonderings about the passages and their relevance to today to trigger some further thoughts which he prayed would be guided by the Holy Spirit.
In the Jeremiah reading, the Israelites were coping with a disaster and it was difficult to distinguish between true and false prophets.
In the reading from 2 Timothy, Paul was imprisoned in Rome at a time when Christians were being persecuted as scapegoats for causing a disastrous fire in Rome which historians believe was started by the Emperor Nero himself.
In the Luke passage Jesus tells the parable of the proud and righteous Pharisee and the repentant, humble Tax Collector, both at prayer. Humility was affirmed as the better path to God, as well as prayer which focused on the needs of others rather than being self-congratulatory. Churches which provide regular prayer can also be community assets.
