5th July – The Gospel of Peace

11th July 2026

Readings:  Zechariah 9: 9-12   Romans 7: 15-25a
Matthew 11: 16-19, 25-end

Robin commented briefly on each of the readings and made connections with the emergence of liberation theology such as in the writings of Ernesto Cardenal, a Roman Catholic Priest who inspired the people of his parish in Solentiname, an archipelago island in Nicaragua. They read the Bible together and realised how it spoke to them. Peace and Justice are at the heart of this understanding of the Gospel.
Zechariah’s invitation to become members of a movement seeking to bring peace to nations was paralleled with Jesus’ invitation to his followers to become members of a movement called initially as “The Way”. In our present context we were invited as a congregation to rediscover what it means to be making a difference in our neighbourhood and indeed in our world.
