23rd August – Pictures, Prayer and Moving Music

27th August 2020

Sunday’s service was built around the Lectionary’s Gospel passage where Peter named Jesus as Messiah, and as an aid to meditation on the names we use for Jesus, we listened to ‘O Bone Jesu’, a motet by the early 16th century Scottish composer, Robert Carver, for no fewer than nineteen voices. While the music played, images appeared on screen to help us contemplate the revelation of God to us in different ways. Two songs new to the congregation, from the Ancient & Modern hymnal, were selected for our soloist Laura, accompanied sensitively by Gordon, and – who knows? – they may now become part of the regular repertoire. We were grateful again to John for sending us out with an organ voluntary, on this occasion by John Ireland. Many thanks to those who provided technical and practical help.
An optimistic proposal for gathering in the church garden to chat after the service was thwarted by a sudden turn in the weather, but we are ever hopeful for a future opportunity, since we’re being careful to keep distant indoors.

We look forward to welcoming Andrea back to lead the service this coming Sunday at 10am.
