Proverbs 9:1-6

Ephesians 5:15-20

John 6:51-58

It was good to welcome Andrea and Stephen back after their holiday. Andrea led the service with Robin preaching.
The Proverbs reading 9:1-6 was used as the focus for the theme of Wisdom, exploring the meaning of the ‘seven pillars’ in the verse ‘Wisdom has hewn her house, she has hewn her seven pillars’. On a simple level it could refer to the architecture of a substantial building where seven was seen as the perfect number. Interestingly T E Lawrence’s autobiographical account (Lawrence of Arabia) was titled ‘Seven Pillars of Wisdom’. Robin then talked about the deeper spiritual meaning of the ‘seven pillars’ as described in Proverbs 8:12-14 ‘I, wisdom, live with prudence, and I attain knowledge and discretion, The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil….I have good advice and sound wisdom; I have insight, I have strength.’ The meaning of these characteristics was then developed with reference to one commentary which concluded that ‘Strength’ results from the adoption of the previous six!
