Joint Church Cake Walk

22nd September 2022

Last Saturday we were blessed with dry weather for our walk from the stables car park at Oscar’s cafe, Mugdock to Mairi and Niall’s at Easter Carbeth about 4.5 miles in all.  Twenty seven of us embarked on the walk at a very leisurely pace which provided a great opportunity for conversation as well as fresh air, exercise and wonderful views of the Campsies.

The lunch spot was well chosen with plenty of rocks and tufts of grass to sit on, as well as with views across the valley and loch. Soon after our picnic lunch we came to a field with a group of cattle who became very frisky and agitated on seeing an unusually large number of walkers entering their field. Louise and Andrea with their dogs took an alternative route but with brisk walking soon joined up with the main party further along the route.

The walk continued onto the John Muir Way and included a sighting of the ancient Gowkstane. There were views to the distant mountains before entering the woods and then turning onto a downhill path which eventually joined the West Highland Way near to our destination.

Tea, coffee and a vast array of delicious cakes greeted us when we arrived at Mairi and Niall’s. Numbers were swelled by other members of both congregations joining us for the hospitality. With trestle table and borrowed chairs, there was room for everyone!

Mairi took us up the garden where she showed us her scenic labyrinth and her chapel, a project that she started during lockdown. We were amazed at what she’s achieved in creating this special place which is now nearly finished.

Thanks to Marie and Niall for their hospitality & to all the cake makers for their baking and for this opportunity for our two congregations to spend time together in such an enjoyable way.
