19th April – The Road to Emmaus

20th April 2026

In his sermon today Robin highlighted the parallels between what happened in the disciples encounter with Jesus on the road to Emmaus shortly after his resurrection and the weekly worship in St Andrew’s in which Jesus continues to make his presence known.

It was when Jesus broke bread with the disciples that they recognised Him. It was when he explained the scriptures to them that their hearts were warmed [just as the Methodist Church founder John Wesley’s had been when he attended evening worship.]

We are encouraged to recognise these movements of the Holy Spirit in our own lives today and also to notice when Christ is present in strangers, especially those in need and suffering.

Following the successful screening of the film ‘2040’, which the Peace & Justice Group brought to Cairns in 2021, they are planning to screen a follow-up film on Monday 20 April at 7.30pm, again in Cairns Church. “In ‘Future Council’ Damon Gameau takes eight kids from all over the world on the ultimate school excursion: a road trip across Europe to challenge powerful leaders and find solutions to our greatest ecological challenges. This is a coming-of-age journey that dares to imagine a brighter future”. There will be no charge, but donations will be invited to cover the cost of hiring the film.
